Foods that Are Good for Your Eyes By on February 21, 2011

We all know that one of the keys to living a healthy life is eating a healthy diet. That’s pretty straightforward. But did you know that there are some foods that are particularly good for your eyes? The team at our Virgin Islands LASIK surgery center wants to take a little time to go over a few great foods that are good for you and your eye health.

First of all, there are carrots. You’ve probably heard about the vision health benefits of carrots for some time now. We’re here to confirm that what you’ve heard is true. This is due to the beta carotene content inside of carrots, which is an anti-oxidant that will help prevent the formation of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Another orange vegetable to consider for healthy eyes is the sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are rich in beta carotene (and they taste great as well).

Another set of foods to consider are foods rich in vitamin C since vitamin C is also helpful for promoting eye health. Citrus fruits, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and bell peppers are all great sources of vitamin C.

You should also consider incorporating some spinach into your diet. Filled with vitamin C and beta carotene as well as lutein and zeaxanthin, spinach is great for protecting your eyes from sun damage and light damage.

Don’t think it’s just vegetables and fruits that are great for your eyes, though. In fact, turkey and ostrich are both good for healthy eyes as well. (That’s right, ostrich.) Both of these birds contain zinc, which is essential for retina health, as well as other important vitamins and minerals. It’s also important to keep salmon and sardines in mind since both contain omega-3 fats, which are great for you.
