Custom LASIK Benefits By on July 14, 2011

One of the great advances in laser vision correction technology has been the use of computers to help map each patient’s corneas with great accuracy. This corneal map has allowed for greater precision and effectiveness when performing LASIK. When using this corneal map as a guide, this is referred to as custom LASIK. True, every LASIK surgery is customized to the patient’s needs, but custom LASIK means much better customization of the surgery.

When you come to our Virgin Islands LASIK surgery center, we’ll perform a full consultation to determine if custom LASIK is right for you. Right now, we’d like to discuss the benefits of custom LASIK in general terms. When you visit us, we’ll be sure to answer any questions you have in much more detail. For now, though, let’s see why custom LASIK is such a clear choice for clearer vision.

One of the biggest benefits of custom LASIK is its ability to address certain so-called higher-order aberrations. These sorts of vision problems are different than your usual refractive errors (i.e., nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism). Higher-order aberrations refer to vision irregularities such as halos, poor night vision, and excessive glare. These occur as the result of miniscule imperfections on the surface of the cornea. Given the great accuracy of corneal mapping technology, these issues can be identified and addressed through custom LASIK. Traditional LASIK, on the other hand, is usually unable to correct these high-order aberrations.

Another great benefit, and one you’re probably wondering most about, is improved and enhanced vision. Traditional LASIK or Virgin Islands PRK can reduce your need for corrective lenses. There’s no guarantee of 20/20 vision, but traditional LASIK patients achieved 20/20 vision or better 75 percent of the time. With custom LASIK, your sight can improve dramatically. Though there’s no guarantee of 20/20 vision with custom LASIK either, an FDA study showed that roughly 98 percent of custom LASIK patients achieved 20/20 vision or better.
